In Western Australia in 1988, a state-wide youth suicide prevention strategy was launched, which included a Youth Suicide Advisory Committee (YSAC).
In 1996, the YSAC expanded its scope to include suicide prevention in young Indigenous populations and the Aboriginal Suicide Prevention Steering Committee [ASPSC] was established in 1998. This included the development of more universal approaches to prevention (targeting and encouraging mental health amongst young people, planned with the Office for Children and Youth Department for Community Development).
In 2000, the YSAC broadened its scope to consider suicide prevention in all high risk populations, regardless of age, (such as males between the ages of 20 and 34 years, not just those under 18 years).
In 2001, the YSAC became the Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention (MCSP) to reflect its more population inclusive approach to suicide prevention.
In 2008 the Minister for Mental Health was mandated by Cabinet to ensure that all State Government departments prioritise suicide prevention and participate in a coordinated response and in 2009 a revised Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention was appointed.
The Minister for Mental Health will give new direction and responsibility to the suicide prevention experts, including community and corporate leaders, government departments, professionals and people impacted by suicide who constitute the revised Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention.
