Training

Improving mental health literacy and developing skills to better recognise and support vulnerable people is an important part of suicide prevention . One Life encourages individuals and organisations to access accredited mental health and suicide prevention training programs. These training programs include:

  • Mental Health First Aid. Mental health first aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves. The 12-hour MHFA course is run over two days and aims to improve mental health literacy across a range of mental health conditions. There are specific programs for teenagers, young people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and some ethnic communities.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) The ASIST workshop is for caregivers who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Over one million caregivers have participated in this two-day, highly interactive, practical, practice-oriented workshop.
  • Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Training. Gatekeeper training is for professionals and para-professionals whose roles bring them into regular contact with young people and adults at risk of suicide. The two day training course teaches participants to identify and respond to people at risk of suicide and provides a framework for risk assessment and intervention.For more information contact the Suicide Prevention team at the Mental Health Commission at: SuicidePrevention.MHC@health.wa.gov.au.   • Working Minds training – FREE. Learn about suicide prevention in the workplace; what to do when someone is suicidal; identify early warning signs and develop protective factors; and how to ask the questions that could save a life. Three hour workshops are held twice a month at the St Mary’s Cathedral, Victoria Square, Perth. Book by emailing Clive Elliott at celliott@centrecare.com.au
